What is a BOPP Label?

Every company working with bottles, jars, and cans needs a reliable way to label these products. One particularly popular label type is known as the BOPP label, and it can be found on all sorts of everyday essentials, from jars of food to bottles of skincare lotion and even household cleaning products. They’re versatile, easy to make, and are used by companies all over the world to sell and market their products.

What is a BOPP label, though, why are they so popular, and how are they made? Here’s everything you need to know about BOPP labels.

What BOPP Stands For

A BOPP label is also known as a Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylene label. This may sound complicated and scientific, but it’s actually quite simple.

A BOPP label is just a thermoplastic polymer that’s stretched flat through one of various methods. That’s what “biaxially-oriented” means it’s just being pulled into two different directions until it’s label-thin.

Why BOPP Labels Are Popular

BOPP labels are ideal because they’re thin, flat, plastic strips that conform well when wrapped around a container. There are many other benefits, which all help explain why BOPP labels are so popular and common, especially for certain kinds of products.

Strength and Reliability

For one thing, they’re designed to be strong and durable. This makes them ideal compared to other types of labels, as they won’t easily rip or break. Their durability doesn’t only extend to strength and flexibility, however. The plastic is also resistant to water, oil, acids, bases, and solvents.

In other words, the labels won’t break apart if they get wet or messy, which is why they’re so often used for cleaning, food, and skincare products. A label that can’t stand up to the product it’s advertising is a label that’s likely to be easily ruined through the use of the product, which isn’t the case when using a BOPP label. They’re reliable and versatile and thus can be used for a variety of things that other labels can’t be.

This durability, however, doesn’t mean that the labels can’t still be broken down. They’re recyclable, which makes them a bit more eco-friendly than other kinds of labels. Thus, this also means that the containers they’re attached to can be recycled as well, without trying to peel off a strong, adhesive plastic first.

Another thing that makes them great for food containers is the fact that they’re non-toxic. People can reliably use a BOPP label for food without worrying about making people sick.

All in all, BOPP labels are useful for labeling products without worrying about causing any harm to the buyer, environment, or even the label itself.

Superior Printing Ability

The other significant benefit of using a BOPP label is that they allow for more options and better printing ability. To start, you can have your BOPP labels come in a variety of styles to match your company’s intended aesthetic, as well as to fit what the product itself is:

  • White labels are the most common, especially for food containers and health or beauty products. You can use them for just about anything due to how simple and basic they are.
  • Metallic gold and silver labels are the same as the white labels, except for a stunning gold or silver finish that makes the containers look shinier, classier, and more luxurious.
  • Clear labels offer a “no label” look that can be used in a variety of situations. You’ll see the logo and necessary product information, but the rest of the label will blend in with the container, making it appear as though the container was printed on directly.
  • Squeezable labels are used primarily for skincare products, like squeezable tubes of lotion. They’re also used for plastic drinking bottles. The goal here is to allow people to squash and flex the container without damaging or being restricted by the label.

BOPP labels are also designed to be easy to print on while preserving the ink due to their waterproof and oilproof nature. For example, a company that uses flexographic label printing would also likely use a BOPP label, as the two pair well together. If you’re thinking about having your own flexographic BOPP labels printed by a company you can depend on to get your labels right, contact Royal Label to see how we can help you.
